Let’s start with the top of the tier – Diamonds. This is one of the most often faked stones on the market. You have to be careful and know what to look for when diamond shopping.

DIAMONDS: A real diamond will not fog up on the surfaces if you breathe hot air on it. It has high thermal conductivity. Glass, Cubic Zirconia, and other fakes will fog up like a bathroom mirror. It’s a dead giveaway.

If you look directly down at the top of a diamond and see rainbow reflections its either a low quality diamond or a fake.

The ultimate test is to heat the stone up with a lighter and then drop it into a glass of cool water. If it is glass or quartz it will shatter. A real diamond will have no effect.

EMERALDS: To tell if an emerald is real, examine it under a magnifying glass. There should be no spiral or tubular patterns. Real emeralds are always cool to the touch even when worn as they do not conduct heat well.

Want to know if an emerald is synthetic or natural? Here is how you tell: Use a black light in total darkness. If it emits a red, yellow, or olive green hue, it’s a fake. Orange or a dull red it could be either natural or synthetic. You will need further examination. No fluorescence – chances are it is the real deal.

PEARLS: The bite test. That’s right. Place pearls between your teeth, if you bite down it should creek like sand. Artificial pearls will feel smooth.

AMBER: The salt test: place the amber in a glass of water with 3 tablespoons of salt. Glass, plastic, or even epoxy resin will sink. Real amber will float. Or, rub the piece with a wool fabric – real amber will create a static shock.

SAPPHIRE: The same breath test as a diamond applies to sapphires. If it fogs up it’s a fake.  A real sapphire will have blemishes and specks. Real sapphires will not have air bubbles. A real sapphire will reflect only the color of the stone, no rainbows like a prism.
