We all enter into marriage with the highest and most noble of hopes – to stay together, in love, until death do us part.
Unfortunately, the reality here in the United States in 2019 is that there is 1 divorce approximately every 36 seconds.
That’s nearly 2,400 divorces per day, 16,800 divorces per week and 876,000 divorces a year. The divorce rate for a first marriage is around 41%. The divorce rate is 60% for a second marriage and 73% for a third.
And as crazy as that sounds, those are the statistics according to the CDC. This lands a lot of people with some very expensive jewelry that can no longer be worn. The meaning has been tarnished and rings are forced to sit in boxes and drawers.
Our suggestion is that rather than hanging on to mementos from a relationship that failed, which is ultimately a bittersweet reminder at best, to help monetize your future with a bit of your past.
According to the Knot’s 2016 Real Weddings Study, Americans spent an average of $6,163 on engagement rings, up from $5,871 in 2015. Wedding bands for the bride and engagement rings combined cost between $5,968 and $6,258.
While that is a retail estimate that is still a good chunk of potential cash that could be easily liquidated.
You have options in choosing to sell your rings of course. Your choice may depend greatly on the need to sell, how much time you have, and how much effort you are willing to put towards it.
Private sale: If you are able to sell your jewelry to a private buyer by way of advertising you can likely get the highest asking price. But, seller beware, potential buyers can be flakey agreeing to a price or a time and then not showing up, and you may open yourself up to the possibility of scams.
Consignment at a jewelry store: Consigning is certainly an option. It involves finding a store willing to take your piece in on consignment. That store would then split the sale with you at whatever percentage agreed upon. It can be as high as 50%. It is then placed in their display case, and when a buyer is found, you get a call and a check.
